Unsecured debt is a loan where there is no collateral securing the loan. Most credit cards are a form of unsecured debt. The interest you pay for unsecured debt is usually greater than for secured debt. That is why your mortgage will typically be at a lower rate than your credit card balance. The mortgage is secured by your house. If you stop paying, the bank can take your house.
